Learning & training in your organization: why is it on the back burner?

IT’S BEEN A BUSY YEAR IN THE WORKPLACE

THE WORKPLACE TRIAGE: DAY TO DAY CRISIS FIRST....TRAINING WHEN WE FIND THE TIME!

As I meet people today the number one challenge I see is that change is happening faster than ever before. I don't know if you are like me but I can’t tell you how many times I get off task because something presumably more urgent surfaces. I don't think I am alone on this one. I meet with leaders in the workplace and see the multiple roles they must play to get the job done. They have their office phone to take incoming calls. They have their cell phones to receive the more urgent calls. They have instant messaging and texting to receive the ubber urgent requests. As an observer in this fast paced workplace world, people cope as if they are living in a triage ward.

In hospital emergency rooms you are triaged based on life threatening conditions. Code red is the color that signals immediate attention due to life threatening conditions.

DO YOU LIVE IN CODE RED?

The emergency team does a quick analysis and determines where you are on the urgent list. Today, I see workplaces living in this emergency room zone more than they like. With cut backs, jobs restructuring, and retiring executives not being replaced, the workplace is juggling to get it all done. The urgent becomes the priority. The code reds get dealt with and the important aspects of an organization like learning and training  often take the back seat as a code yellow or green.

If your organization is living in code red, what others growth oriented business tasks get dropped?

Much like the hospital emergency rooms, today I see a need for workplaces to focus on the code reds of their organization (dealing with workplace injuries, employee hiring/firing, and other crises on the job) and find ways to get to the code yellow and greens too (learning and training). Its a simple shift in managing workplace tasks and finding resources to maximize time. Many organizations already invest in employee search companies to find new candidates for their organizations. They know the time it takes to review resumes and screen people and is important to the life and sustainability of the organization. One of the other critical but often neglected tasks in a company is the learning and training  programming. People realize the value of providing ongoing effective training in the workplace, but often run out of time to plan it and run it consistently. In many organizations it kind of is like an after thought and gets the last minute of the day focus. The results: disengaged employees, unmet job skills, and growing turnover rates.  People are feeling overwhelmed and know the task to plan training is a big job. Today workplaces have options. Here are some ideas on how you can tackle the task of planning training so you can serve the code reds and manage workplace training at the same time.
